XP (SP2) Firewall troubles

by whimsykill . Updated 18 years, 11 months ago

I have the exact same problem as arium18 (see post below):
“I cannot open windows firewall. When i do it says that the service cannot be displayed because the associated services are not running. But when i go into the services and try to start it, it wont let me. It says that it cannot start the service on the local computer, error 5, access denied. I’ve tried everything else suggested, can someone please help me. I also forgot to mention that when i start my computer, a generic host win32 process error shows up. I am able to access my firewall before this shows up, but when i close it, windows firewall access becomes denied. Other processes also stop.”

Also, the browser and dchp services (amongst others) are stopped and although I can still access the net I am denied access to workgroup computers because I am no longer a member of it. When check the computer name in systeminfo the “description box” is greyed out, and when I select ‘change computer name’ it lets me do it, but 1st pops up with a msg saying ‘you cannot join a domain or workgroup until networking is enabled’

Kaspersky, Ad-Aware Pro and Spyware doc found nothing wrong, and there are no newly installed programmes or anything… xp been running fine with sp2 prior to this :S

I don’t really care about firewall (zonealarm is easy enuf to get) but no lan access is really frustrating. I can manually start all the stopped services (except firewall of course) but they shut themselves down after a few minutes.

It’s driving me mad!
Any help appreciated muchly!!
