I’ve seen maybe two posts about this problem around the web, but can’t seem to find any useful tips at a fix.
I’m working on a family member’s HP Pavilion running XP SP2.
No matter which mode I boot in, it hangs at the same point, then the screen goes blank. It does not restart.
Booting in safe mode revealed that the offending driver is kmxstart.sys. A little research indicates this file is affiliated with a possible CA vulnerability, but I have no idea if these two problems are connected.
Recovery Console (I ran chkdsk /r) did identify and fix some things, but the problem persists.
