Locked

XP StartUp

By gneff4116 ·
When booting, things seem to be fine until the screen ask to you to click on the name of the user. Problem is the mouse will not function -locked up I guess. I have tried several mouse (mice) that work on other computers but I get the same results. Therefore I cannot start windows XP. I have a boot disk but it also freezes at the same point. I prefer to not reload Windows XP if at all possible. I need your help please - Thanks

Are these PS/2 or USB mice?

If you have tried several PS/2 mice, it is possible that your PS/2 port is blown.

Try a USB mouse.

If that does not work, you should be able to use the tab and arrow keys to select a user.

If the mouse does not work after booting, you may need to install a new driver.

I tried both PS/2 and the USb mouse by using the tab and arrow keys - pointer did not move.

Hi

Do you also have the same problem when starting Windows in Safe Mode? Boot your computer and press and hold down the F8 key. You will then be presented with a Boot Menu. Choose Safe Mode, and see what happens.

Good luck

I was able to choose and boot in the safe mode. However, I was asked to select the user and the same problem occured - cannot move the pointer to make a selection.

Well it may be that I am just misunderstanding but it sounded like in one of your replys that you are trying to move the pointer with tab or arrow keys. This is not the point. You should be able to use tab or arrow keys to select the user. You should be able to see the selections/emphasis change.

Another possibility is to hit ctrl-alt-del twice and you should get a login box rather than the selectable users. Just manually type in the user info and password here.

If you are unable to get this to work and nothing is happening it may be that the whole system is freezing at this point. You might try using "last known good" config. This option is available in the menu you got by pressing F8.

maybe you have a 'hang' going on, not a mouse problem...
i would boot in Safe mode and try restoring to a previous restore point. i would examine the event log for clues. i would scan (in safe mode) for viruii and spyware. i would turn off the welcome screen and fast user switching (see Windows Help for fastest)

If you use Microsoft Intellipoint software, there may be an issue with it. I have come across a couple problems when the software runs at startup where users lose the mouse functionality.

Remove the intellipoint entry in hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/current_version/run

Reboot and try again.
