XP System Restore will not work

By CTR2000 ·
I've recently installed XP Pro and haven't bothered to look at system restore until i put in all the windows updates.
Then today i went into system properties and clicked on the system restore button and it gives a rundll error: an exception occured while trying to run shell32.dll, control_rundll sysdm.cpl, system. And i click ok and system properties closes out. I also went to start/accessories/system tools/system restore and all i get is a little action on the hard drive but nothing opens up.
I did some searching around Tech-Net but didn't find out anything yet.
The other thing that could have caused this is that when i installed XP Pro i had two hard drives. 8gb and 30gb. The smaller drive i used for files. And the larger i had installed Windows 98, 2000 and XP. At the time Xp only had 2.5gb of space allocated to it; as i was just trying it out to see if everything worked or not. Well XP seem to be working fine and then i decided to get rid of the Windows 2000 partition and format it and give the remaining unallocated space to XP by using Partition Magic 8. Everything went fine and now there is only Windows 98 and XP Pro on the system.

I need to know if anybody has an idea on how to fix system restore without reinstalling the whole operating system. Either by using the registry or whatever else would do the trick.
Thanks.

1) When you click the System properties icon your starting the Sysdm.cpl. The following files are required to start either. Sometimes certain software installations cause these files to be replaced with incorrect, inappropriate or older files without the customary notice that they are being replaced. Commctrl.dll, Commdlg.dll, Shell.dll, Lzexpand.dll, Ver.dll and Mmsystem.dll
To fix this it's best to extract from your Windows CD-Rom all the files mentioned:
Sysdm.cpl
Commctrl.dll
Commdlg.dll
Shell.dll
Lzexpand.dll
Ver.dll
Mmsystem.dll

Try your System Restore link after replaceing the above files from your WinXP cd. Or from another WinXP box. If that fails then try<

2) Re-creating the link for System Restore:

Target: %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Here's a good link for Control Panel problems:

You should also be able to run the program from a command prompt if you navigate over to the target directory and type in the executable. If the program is not working, then make sure system restore is not turned off:

To turn on System Restore
Open System Properties (Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> double-click System).
In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
Ensure that the Turn off System Restore check box is cleared.

And make sure the program itself is not corrupted.

I wasn't sure on how to extract the files but did find something on the web that showed me how to do it but that didn't change anything. Number 2 is ok as the file properties have exactly what you have printed out there. And when i open system properties (as i mentioned before) and click on the system restore tab i get the error i noted above and then system properties closes out when you click ok on the error.
Is there a way to reinstall XP without wiping out your system again justlike in the windows 98 days when you could just install windows 98 over top of the existing 98 and get the original version back? My experience with 2000 Pro was that you had to reformat the hard drive; and couldn't just install over top of it; unless i am wrong.

It's not recommended to reinstall WinXP over itself in order to get your OS working properly. The two times I tried it, I've seen compatibility issues, taskbar issues, icon issues, and application issues that could not be resolved. I ended up booting with the WinXP cds and formatting the entire drive and starting over.

That is probably your best alternative. Sorry.

Thanks for the 2nd answer Anna.
I am going to leave the question open for a few days and see if anyone else has a possible solution. If i don't hear anything i will pass along the point to you.

Why not do a Repair Instalation

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At thispoint an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Setup will delete all major system files and then replace them with new copies. But it leaves your programs and data intact.

You will have to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update again because it replaces the files.

XP System Restore will not work

I didn't know they changed repair on XP as when i experienced repair on 2000 it didn't seem to do much. Anyway, i tried it and it got me a little bit further but the system restore tab was gone out of the system properties box and when i accessed system restore another way it gave me an error about winsta.dll. Couldn't start in it or something like that. Then I tried to re-image the computer but for some reason it would always restart just before the logon screen. So i reformatted the drive and reinstalled and now it works. I think the changing i did to my drive structures messed things up. But i really appreciate your answer but have to go with Anna as she suggested to format.
Thanks a lot.
