XP to NT networking

I’m having an issue connecting to my NT server via PCs running XP. I can see the server on the network but no matter what I enter into the NT box’s user details I get blocked because of an unrecognised id/password! It is a standalone server and not part of a domain. Has anyone else come across a similar problem?
