What would cause letters (typing) to appear anytime the curser is left unused. Program running does not make a difference, for example it can happen in explorer, word, even in help in search box?

correct EMAIL ADDRESS BOB@CPUNETWORKS.NET, my account has been down since they performed maintenance and I am sick of trying to straighen it out with techRepublic

Look for the process SAPISVR.EXE. (Ctrl+Alt+Delete). If it's running then Speach Recognition is the problem.

Go to your Control Panel and Regional Settings. On the Language tab
click the Details command and remove Speech Recognition. This disables it.

To uninstall Speech then you'd need to use Add/Remove Programs. It's part of the Office suite.

if not the speech problem from #1, is it random characters? have you tried another keyboard?

I've seen keyboards go bad, and I've seen someone sabotage a keboard ... they cut into the cable.. it didn't die immediately and there were random straycharacters showing up when typeing or not..

and of course I'm assuming you've got good anti-virus and that its not a known virus or you don't have any trojans.

Instead of uninstalling the speach recognition program, because you my want to use it in the future, just go into your volume properties, and mute your microphone. The microphone is picking up background sounds and the speech program is "interpreting" them into text.
