XP Upgrade Problems

By brian ·
A client has an HP Pavilion ZE1230 laptop that came with XP Home installed. He was having problems with random lockups. Had to do a hard power off to unlock it.

We decided to upgrade it to XP Pro since he is on a domain anyway and I thought it was a worthwhile upgrade. Well, the upgrade was going smoothly until one of the restarts. I got the message "File \$win_nt$.~bt\halacpi.dll could not be loaded. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to continue." If I pressed a key, it would justloop to that same message. Then I read a post on the net that stated if you hit F7 when it asks if you need to load any disk drivers then it would load the standard hal.dll.

So I did that. And everything went normal. Until the user tried to configure power management. The machine would just power down and his battery light would change states. After waiting for a few minutes the light would come back on and the computer would boot up. But any further messing with the power management would cause and a spontaneous shutdown.

Any ideas what's going on here? Why didn't it like the halacpi.dll file? Is that the hal I should be using? How can I get it to the proper state?

Brian

Does HP show a BIOS update for that model? I had similar lockup problems with a new Gateway, it ended up needing hardware replacement (under warrantee thankfully).

I did upgrade the BIOS. Somewhere along the line it finally installed normally and all is well. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and let ya have the points.
