XP user can't run progs created by Admin

By ecravens ·
I have two admin accounts and two user accounts on an XP-Pro machine. I have installed various pieces of software, including Office 2000, as admin. After installing the software, any user with less than administration rights cannot run the software. As soon as a user logs on, a message shows on the screen that "Office must be re-installed from its original location". Although Office CAN be run, Microsoft FrontPage will not run at all.

If I give that user administration rights, the software works fine. If I assign Power User or less rights, the software will not operate or gives the described errors. Other pieces of software perform similarly.

How do I create a software installation that can be used by ALL users on the machine, regardless of group?

I have had similar problems with ms office 97 on XP machines. The permission problems I recieved were caused by users not having write access to sections of the registry. Refer to knowledge base article Q257643. I found some similar article in the KB but don't remember the numbers and have used them to fix several other Microsoft programs.

Normally XP will not allow people to write the entire files/registry without administrative previlage. One things you can do is using some of the tools e.g regspy to determine which registry key XP was using when starting the program. Open regedit and grant the user have right on the key. You may also using some program like apimon to monitor the API that the program is using when opening it. Grant the right to specific user on the directory.... good luck.
