XP won't access FAT partition on drive

By wilsonrogert ·
Have a 2.5in HD from a crashed laptop that I need data from. Extracted it from laptop and have it connected to 2nd laptop thru a USB-to-IDE connector kit. Second laptop is running XP SP3. Turns out that 1/2 the partition is NTFS and 1/2 is FAT (not FAT32, as I understand it). Don't know how that came to be. FAT partition (EISA configuration) appears under Disk Management but w/o a letter assigned. NTFS half has letter assigned. Both are healthy. XP lets me see the NTFS data, but not the FAT partition data. I cannot do anything to get the FAT partition assigned a letter. All options are unavailable or greyed out. Can't use Convert util as I don't have a letter for FAT partition. I need to access the FAT side data. I've read most of the related responses here but none apply specifically. Suggestions?

Thanks. Looks like a lot of the data was somehow lost beforehand.
Partedit32 (ptedit32) is also available at ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/ along with other legacy utilities.
