XP wont assign 2nd HDD a drive letter

By vincecutter ·
installed a 2nd drive as slave. the Bois detects it, the device manager detects it ,how come XP hasn't assigned it a drive letter, therefore this new drive does not show up with all the other drives in 'my computer' for eg.?

is there some thing ileft out? or need 2 do?

ive currently got 2 additional partitions( & E: - FAT32) on my current H/D after the primary drive (C: - NTFS)

XP wont assign 2nd HDD a drive letter

You have to partition the drive before XP will assign a letter to it.

Go to administrative tools / computer managment
Select drive manager.
You should now see the new drive, and be able to partition and format the drive.

XP works a little different than 9X did when you add new drives.
I assume that your CD drive is presently F:
By default, XP will keep your CD drive as F and assign the first partiton on the new drive as G:

The only time this becomes a proplem, is if you have set upyour system to dual boot with 9X.
As the drives will have different assignments in 9X.
The best work around, is the assign a higher letter to the CD drive before you partition the new hard drive.
Then, partition the new hard drive with only an extended partition, and no primary partition.
This way, 9X will not assign the primary partition as drive .
