Are you hanging in the shut down screen?

Or do you get the it is safe to turn your computer off screen?

For the safe to turn off your computer:
Open device manager.
Click on View.
Select show all devices.

Expand the branches and find APM.

Right click on APM and select enable.

Your PC should shut down properly after a re-boot.

For shutdown hanging:
While much better than Windows 98, XP can still hang for hardware issues.

Start by downloading and running a spy-ware scanner such as AdAware www.lavasoft.de
or SpyBot Search and Destroy.

Then make sure that ALL device drivers are up to date.

Then, check out the XP shutdown trouble shooting guide at www.aumha.org

If that does not work, please post more details of what happens when you attempt to shut down, and the complete list of hardware on your PC.

On the startup tab of msconfig, I have about a page and a half of programs that launch at startup.

The bulk of these are for my anti-virus and firewall.

To see what you have loading at startup, expand the Command column in msconfig and see what folder the command is in and what it is.

Video, modem, and network card drivers are often the culprit when XP will not shut down.

Good stuff from Chas as usual.

Here's one more thing to try.

Disable Anti-virus software and see if computer then shuts down.

In msconfig under General tab, clear checkbox for Load Startup Items. Reboot, then shutdown.

If PC still hangs, problem is not in Startup items (probably driver as per Chas). If removing all startup items fixes problem, sequence them back until culprit is identified. It's easier to do in sections instead of one at a time.

I appreciate the advice. It hangs on the shut down screen. I tried the msconfig and there are a lot of things running but it's hard to tell what they are.
