XP WS disabling W2K WS Shared Printer

By randy.sigler ·
We have an office that has WinXP Pro, Win98, and W2K Pro workstations. They are on a workgroup not a domain. The Win2000 system has a HP 4050 printer attached that is shared to the other computers. One XP WS keeps taking the SHARE of the printer and it wil be disabled on the W2K computer. You can click the share ON on the W2K WS and OFF on the XP WS, but it will revert back.

XP WS disabling W2K WS Shared Printer

I missunderstood something. You have a printer attached to a Win2000 workstation and it is share. An XP workstation taking the share?
Curious! I suppose that you don't install and share the printer on both computer.
Remove/deinstall this printer from XP WS and add it using the <add printer> wizard. Use add <network print server> and if can't download the driver from Win2000 WS use <have disk> option and give it the original drivers from your CD.
If this don't solve your problem check your network settings and user account rights.

XP WS disabling W2K WS Shared Printer

Yes the HP4050 is attached to the W2K machine.
We have uninstalled/reinstalled the printer via the network printer/browse. When properties are opened, the printer SHARE is checked. We then find the W2K printer has its printer SHARE unchecked. You can turn off the SHARE on the XP and ON on the W2K system but the XP system will not keep this setting. This is with admin priv.

Our other XP WS (twin to the problem system) does not cause this problem.
