Xupiter took over my computer ??

By dkstanford ·
Does anyone know anything about Xupiter?
I have an end user with a W2k machine who uses Netscape Navigator for e-mail and Internet Explorer for web surfing . While she was surfing in IE5, she inadvertently clicked on a pop-up ad that she thought was an explorer window. She noticed that something downloaded on her computer. She uses MSN as her home page and now when she uses the search bar at the top of the MSN page, a program called Xupiter launches over the top of the MSN search engine and displays a message saying "The domain you requested does not exist. Try searching for what you're looking for using the links below." When I click the back button on the tool bar, I can see the MSN search engine under Xupiter for just a split second.
Basically, it seems as though Xupiter has embedded itself over the MSN search engine. I tried removing it with Norton's Clean Sweep. I was able to remove everything except one dll file, even though I have administrative
privilege. It still keeps launching itself over the MSN search engine.
Anyone have any experience with this?

I already had Ad-Ware from Lavasoft. I used it but it didn't find or remove Xupiter.

1) make sure it is not in control panel --> add/remove programs (if it is, then "remove" it). and then reboot.

2) go to the www.lavasoftusa.com and download their ad-aware program and install it.

3) run it over your registry and hdd and notice what it finds. Check all the boxes and then click on continue and remove all the spyware software.

4) shutdown, then start up the computer and test.

5) if it's still a problem then get the cleaner from www.moosoft.com and use that program to get rid of xupiter.

I've noticed that a lot of times, if you do not go through control panel --> add/remove programs to uninstall the software, that it will re-appear after coming back.

If it does not uninstall from control panel, then go to the website and redownload the software, reboot and then use control panel --> add/remopve software to "remove" and repeat the above process.

To saihib@lebonon.com

When I used Ad-Aware to find and remove Xupiter, I was using the version with an older reffile (6-15-02). I found out that there is an updated reffile (9-24-02) that will find and remove the Xupiter toolbar. Since you were the first with a solution and I dismissed your answer too quickly, please re-submit your answer and I will give you the points.
