Yellow Exclamation in device manager

By dbh ·
I have a Yellow Exclamation next to INTEL 82371AB/EB PCI to USB universal host controller.
In properties it says:
"The NYKERN.VXD device loader for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2)
To fix this update driver.
When I try toupdate the driver it does not help. It says i already have the best driver for this device. If I remove it, it just reappears after rebooting and automatically installing the drivers.
This is in WindowsME, home networked with one other computer, on cable modem, Abit BX133-RAID motherboard.

Thanks much,
Daniel

this sounds familiar! It happened to me when I tried to install a master hard disk in a PC. We have a remote location and I thought I install everything on the hardware (software) and there I'll only change the hardware and maybe reinstall the modemand the printer. But I got in the same problem when Windows started to recognize the new configuration. In the end I had to reinstall Windows and everything was OK.

Go to www.windrivers.com,www.driversforum.com,and manufacturers web site for updated driver version.
Go back to device manager and highlight the controller, click the remove button and then reboot the system,it should detect new hardware,do not let windows search for driver, load it manually and then with the driver on a floppy after selecting from list, click on have disk and manually load the driver,if all goes well you can reboot and contoller should be working.

In order to get the system to stop automatically reinstalling the same set of drivers after removal and reboot, you might have to delete the device's driver information file from the windows\inf directory after removing the item in device manager. Then when it redetects the hardware upon reboot, it will prompt you for driver install, rather than doing an automatic install.

Sounds like the the device is trying to recognize. If I'm remembering the Intel USB controller correctly, there needs to be a USB root hub in addition to the USB controller, so you may want to manually add that in and then remove the USB controllerand reboot and see what happens.

A lot of systems also come with the onboard USB disbaled, although windows setup still detects it. You may want to poke around the bios and make sure that isn't disbaled in there.

I've never really installedME with an Intel Chipset but with all the previous versions (95/98/98SE) you had to get an INF patch so the busmastering drivers loaded correctly. www.windrivers.com is a good place to find these (under busmastering and then Intel)

Good luck to you

Mark
