Interesting, what happens is that you manually run the setup file from a properly setup DOS prompt.

The procedure has you do the first few things that happen when you boot from the CD.

Makes you wonder why MS offers the download for the XP startup floppy disk set.

You can pretty much just use a W98 startup disk to run XP setup.

Basically, there are different ways to install Windows for reasons.

The install from DOS is not really meant for installing from CD, but for when you copy the whole contents of the CD to the Harddisk, or if you haven't got a CD Drive at all and have booted to the network via dos so you can install from a network drive.

There are reasons behind the madness.

Yes you can set up windows XP from dos. Boot up your system got to your cd drive. The to \i386 director and run winnt.exe . That will commence the setup...
