You can't do this with Linux or OSX...

We were on a holiday... you probably noticed the silence and/or rise in general level of conversation
So, anyway, I ordered our ten old Window units to be replaced while we were away; new hardware, clean install. Airovents with silencers on all of them.
God damn it's beautiful.
Only bad part is, that the whole house was cold to the core. We had all the radiators covered with plastic during the install, and obviously they had to have the walls open quite a lot.
Radiators were on maximum power, and it just had no effect. I almost had a Kirk-to-Scotty moment, but I decided that flushing the reactor core wouldn't help the situation

Well, the replaced ones were from '85...

Y'know? That's old!
Drafty, poorly insulated, let all outside noise through... had to go.

Hey, I still have the originals in my house

70-80 years old.

But I also have storm sets on the outside of most of them, so it's not so drafty. Surprisingly, the house is otherwise fairly well insulated; it will stay comfortably warm inside until outdoor temperatures go below 50°F.

Pre-modern windows...

Those are sweet. Hand-crafted by carpenters, out of real wood, wood that's had time to settle before carving.
They don't, really don't make them like that anymore...
House I grew up in? 100 year old windows... could've done with a bit of caretaking... paint off, paint on... otherwise they were just fine.

You have finally come to realize

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Pre-modern windows...

That you are nothing more than a Windows Cleaner no matter what you get paid to do. See you don't really work in IT because you don't deal with Mac's or Nix only Windows.

Sash weights?

by santeewelding In reply to Pre-modern windows...

Without sash weights, they are inauthentic. Tantamount to a Registry.

Guillotine windows are purely americana to us over here...
We have hinged ones, mostly. The ones where I grew up were a cross shape; four sections to each window; the two lower sections tall, the upper sections square. Cross shaped in total, hinges wallwards, two panes - outer and inner, to each section.

new windows . . .

by Who Am I Really In reply to You can't do this with Li ...

are they more secure than the previous ones were?
or do they break just as easily?

are they harder or easier to operate?
do they open the same way?

are they blurry around the edges?

Are they transparent (also known as "Aero interface")?
