I think things grew too intense. Not only did epistemological considerations grow intense — what do you know; how do you know; how, specially, do you know [i]that[/i] you know, being a quirk of TR — but, that, those considerations bore too near and threatened conventional makeup.
Get rid of that and you make it safe for the new flock of seagull, and a PTB, along with their agents, all too administratively willing, themselves lacking.
