I am a 19 year old ISC and I’m Lost in my Job. I went to a vocational technical school for 3 years, got my A+ and several others, and I am presently going to Allentown Business School for LAN Technologys. I was working in Data Entry. when a position opened up at my place of employment as an ISC. I revised my resume and sent it in. a couple weeks went by and I sent it in again. I revised it once more. After about 5 months of repitition and some help from my fellow employees and supervisors Igot the job. Right now I’m 6 months into the job and I’m starting to get worried. I am the only IT guy here. I maintain over 40 employees computers, peripherals, NT 4.0 server, network cabling etc. I do all of this and I feel I do it well. My question is what else should I do. I am limited to what I can do because everything major comes down from IT Headquarters. Sometimes I find myself with nothing to do. Should I be planning projects? Should I stay here? It is a great opportunity for mebut I feel I may not have the business skills for this job. I have been looking for a job in Help Desk somewhere I have gotten a few offers but I cannot take them because of my night school. Please help me out I’m lost in my work!

      A few things here.

First – you should have been tipped off by what it took to get the job. If that is the image they are presenting to the world then I can’t consider what happens behind the doors.

Second – how is your night school interfering with your job search? Is your current company paying your tuition or is it a scheduling thing? How much longer will you be in school? These are all issues to consider before making the jump. If you just have to stick it out for another semesteryour answer might be different than if you had years.

Third – are the skills you are learning applicable to future jobs? Do you have the opportunity to increase your skills (projects, training, etc.)? Your answers will help you decide.

Overall – is what you are doing something that will help or hinder you in getting another job? The longer you wait the more difficult it will be.

I was tipped of in the least bit. And I am doing the job they described. I have about 10 months of school left. I have to go to school 3 nights a week and I study or work late most of the rest. I do get to search up on jobs. But their isn’t many in my area or near area for LAN administering that I can find. I have put my resume on monster.com and some other well known sites. I have go quite a few replys but I had to turn them all down because I would have to travel a bit.
And yes the skills I am learning will definitly help me. This is almost my dream job except without the slow moving corprate decisions it would be great. You have helped me alot and if you have anything else you would like to add due to my reply it would be much appreciated.
        Thank you again
