ZoneAlarm Pro 3.0

By AMDforME ·
I downloaded ZA Pro several days ago. Now when ever I reboot I get this message:

WSAENETDOWN
ListenOnPort(),listen() failed

After trying several databases, encyclopedias &
search engines my best guess is that it has to do with networking. I'm not on a network. The OS is Windows ME.
Does anyone out there know what this means?

According to the Microsoft SDK, the error message means "The Windows Sockets implementation detected that the network subsystem failed."
This is not good.
The error message is a leftover from the original TCP/IP stack/protocol work done by the people at Berkeley. This looks like a catch-all error message that means that the networking stack is fried!
Sure, you might be on a stand-alone WinME box, but you still have networking enabled.
I would uninstall ZoneAlarm, reboot, and see if the error remains. If the error is gone, then go ahead and try to reinstall ZA, but make sure that EVERYTHING is shut off before you install ZA. Anti-virus programs, IE, Notepad, Winamp - everything!
You see, ZA (and other software-based firewall products)do not just sit on top of the OSI model (Layer 7) and do their thing. They get their digital fingers lower in the stack (Layer 4) to successfully monitor IP communications correctly. So, installing ZA is gonna modify your networking some.
And sometimes, problems happen.
This is an example of that.

IF removing ZA does NOT stop the error message, you are gonna have to uninstall your entire IP stack, reinstall it, and hopefully everything will be ok. You would right-click on Network Neighborhood -> Properties, and remove all IP protocols installed. Possibly remove any Services (like Client for Microsoft Networks) also, just in case.

Before you do all of this, contact Zone Labs, see if they have anything to suggest.
hope this helps

Thanks Josesph. This looks like sound advice. I'll give it a shot.
