Apple is testing a new version of its entry-level MacBook Neo, and the upgrades are exactly what budget-conscious power users have been hoping for
The Cupertino giant is developing an updated version of the MacBook Neo that will reportedly move beyond the current model’s A18 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The refreshed budget laptop is being tested with Apple’s A19 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, Bloomberg reported. The upgrade is expected to bring more memory as well, with reports pointing to 12GB of RAM instead of the current 8GB.
The MacBook Neo launched earlier this year as Apple’s most affordable Mac, starting at $599 in the US. However, Apple later raised its starting price to $699 as the company raised prices across much of its Mac lineup.
The current Neo’s lower price helped it stand out in the budget laptop market, and reports suggest Apple wants to keep the model appealing while adding capabilities that better fit growing demand for AI-powered computing.
Beyond internal upgrades, Apple is reportedly planning additional color options for the MacBook Neo.
The current model is available in finishes including Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo. Bloomberg reported that Apple plans to refresh the Neo periodically with new colors to maintain its broad appeal.
The strategy follows Apple’s approach with other consumer-focused products, where design choices and colors help differentiate devices beyond technical specifications.
The AI push behind Apple’s Mac refresh
The MacBook Neo update is part of a much larger Mac overhaul reportedly underway at Apple.
Bloomberg reported that Apple is preparing new versions of nearly every Mac model, including updated MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Studio computers.
The company’s Mac lineup has benefited from increased interest from users running demanding AI applications. More powerful chips and additional memory are becoming increasingly important as AI workloads require more computing resources.
Apple is also reportedly working on higher-end MacBook Pro models with OLED displays and touchscreens, along with future Mac updates built around newer M-series processors.
Higher specs could mean higher prices
The biggest question surrounding the next MacBook Neo is whether Apple can improve the hardware without losing the price advantage that made the device attractive.
Component shortages, particularly around memory chips, are already affecting Apple’s supply chain. Bloomberg reported that those shortages have contributed to higher Mac prices and could influence future product launches.
At $699, a more capable model may be easier to justify, but further price hikes could make it harder for the Neo to compete with lower-cost Windows laptops.
What the upgrade could mean for buyers
A move to 12GB of RAM and the A19 Pro chip would make the MacBook Neo better suited for users who want a longer-lasting entry-level Mac, especially as Apple adds more AI features across its devices.
However, buyers looking for maximum performance may still need to consider higher-end MacBook models, which are expected to offer more powerful M-series chips and additional memory options.
Apple has not announced a release date for the updated MacBook Neo, and the company declined to comment on the reported plans.
