Apple Watch Ultra 4 stretches battery life far beyond the Series 12, but the extra endurance comes with a $400 jump in starting price. The two watches otherwise share Apple’s S11 chip and the same new optical and electrical heart-sensor system.

The $799 Ultra 4 is built for longer stretches away from a charger, with dual-frequency GPS, satellite connectivity, tougher hardware, and extended workout tracking. The $399 Series 12 keeps the same core health platform at a much lower price.

Apple announced both watches on Sept. 9, with retail availability beginning Sept. 18. For most buyers, the choice hinges on whether those outdoor-focused upgrades justify another $400.

What the extra $400 buys

Series 12 and Ultra 4 use the same Health Sensing System, built around new optical and electrical heart sensors. Both support higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements, Recovery HRV, sleep scores, and the new Readiness score. The Series 12’s health upgrades therefore largely overlap with Ultra 4, while Apple’s redesigned Health app is due later in 2026 with additional wellness and longevity guidance.

The hardware differences are larger. Ultra 4 uses dual-frequency GPS instead of the Series 12’s L1 GPS and adds Emergency SOS, Messages, and Find My via satellite. Apple includes two years of satellite service with activation, although feature availability varies by country and region and may depend on a supported carrier plan or other service requirements.

Apple’s Ultra 4 specifications list a 49mm titanium case, sapphire crystal, a 3,000-nit display, and 100-meter water resistance with recreational scuba support to 40 meters. The Series 12 specifications list a 2,000-nit display and 50-meter water resistance.

How we compared them: This comparison uses Apple’s US pricing and published specifications for battery life, charging, GPS, display, durability, connectivity, and health features. Because the watches do not reach stores until Sept. 18, battery-life figures and GPS claims come from Apple rather than independent testing. Rather than scoring the watches, the recommendations are based on which practical differences are most useful for different types of buyers.

Is Ultra 4’s 50-hour battery worth it?

Battery life creates the clearest divide. Series 12 is rated for 24 hours of normal use and 38 hours in Low Power Mode. Ultra 4 raises those figures to 50 and 84 hours.

The gap grows during long workouts. Series 12 is rated for up to 10 hours outdoors, while Ultra 4 reaches 18 hours normally and 25 hours in Extended Workout mode with full GPS and heart-rate readings. Apple says Max Extended Workout mode reaches 45 hours for outdoor runs, walks, and hikes while retaining one-second GPS readings.

Fast charging narrows the difference. Fifteen minutes provides up to 12 hours of Series 12 use or 18 hours on Ultra 4. Reaching 80% takes about 30 minutes on Series 12 and 45 minutes on Ultra 4.

For most buyers, Series 12 offers better value because it shares the S11 platform and core health hardware while costing $400 less. Ultra 4 is easier to justify when multi-day battery life, satellite communication, diving support, or precision GPS are requirements. A similar trade-off appears between the Garmin Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro, where buyers pay extra for tougher materials and additional connectivity options.

Independent testing after Sept. 18 will show how closely Apple’s battery estimates hold up in daily use. For now, Ultra 4 makes the strongest case for its premium when its extra endurance, satellite features, precision GPS, or rugged construction will actually be used.
