A 1,700mAh battery increase is one of the OnePlus 16’s biggest upgrades over the OnePlus 15. The newer flagship also brings a 200MP main camera and a more powerful processor, but those improvements come with a catch.
Launched in China on October 12, 2026, the OnePlus 16 combines a 9,000mAh battery with faster gaming refresh rates and updated camera hardware. Independent testing has yet to establish how much those changes improve everyday performance. OnePlus’ withdrawal from new product launches in North America and Europe also complicates the decision for buyers outside China.
OnePlus 16 vs. OnePlus 15: The key upgrades
The OnePlus 16’s official specifications detail the hardware changes. Here’s how the new flagship compares with its predecessor.

How we compared: We evaluated published specifications, charging capabilities, camera hardware, software support, regional availability, and independent OnePlus 15 testing. Recommendations prioritize practical improvements and purchasing limitations over specification differences alone. Comparable OnePlus 16 test results were unavailable at publication.
Battery and charging: Capacity increases approximately 23%, potentially extending time between charges. However, the Chinese OnePlus 16 supports 100W wired charging, below the Chinese OnePlus 15’s 120W rating. Comparisons of smartphones with larger batteries also show why capacity alone cannot predict real-world endurance.
Cameras: The main camera jumps from 50MP to 200MP, while the telephoto gains a larger sensor but drops from 3.5x to 3x optical zoom. The hardware changes could improve photography, although image quality still needs independent testing.
Performance and display: The newer Snapdragon processor and upgraded cooling system target demanding workloads and sustained gaming. Supported games can run at up to 185Hz, compared with the OnePlus 15’s 165Hz ceiling.
OnePlus 16 vs. OnePlus 15: Is upgrading worthwhile?
The OnePlus 15 remains capable after software updates addressed its initial overheating problems. Android Authority’s December 2025 retesting found that the phone completed demanding stress tests without crashing, although thermal throttling persisted. The OnePlus 16’s sustained-performance advantages remain to be demonstrated.
The new flagship starts at CNY 5,999 (approximately $896) in China, with an introductory price of CNY 5,699 (about $852). These are Chinese-market prices, not official US retail prices.
OnePlus’ regional business adjustment ended new product launches in North America and Europe. Importing the OnePlus 16 introduces potential warranty, carrier compatibility, and software complications.
Long-term support also affects ownership value. The Chinese OnePlus 16 ships with ColorOS 17 rather than the global OnePlus 15’s OxygenOS 16. Differences in Samsung and OnePlus software support illustrate why update commitments deserve consideration before purchasing.
For gamers, photographers, and battery-focused users, the OnePlus 16 offers potentially worthwhile improvements. Buyers considering other officially available Android flagships can compare the Pixel 11 with the OnePlus 15 before choosing an imported successor.
Existing OnePlus 15 owners have less reason to upgrade immediately. Until independent testing establishes meaningful real-world gains, keeping the older model remains the more practical choice for most users.
