Scandisk runs when I start my win98 pc

By Shanghai Sam ·
`Hi! whenever I start my computer scandisk runs and checks drive C then it does the surface scan where it check some of the clusters then it stops. I must rebooth the computer and exit the surface scan before it gets to the point where it stops. I am running Win98 2nd Edition, how can this matter be resolved. I have tried all that I know, without any success. Thanks inadvance,Carlton.

Have you tried running scandisk after the PC has fininshed booting, so that Windows can fix any errors. Then de-frag and re-boot letting the scandisk run if it wants to.
Never seen this error before but it may work. Hope it helps?

Carlton, are you able to get into windows if you cancel scandisk? Also, how is your drive formatted? I've seen scandisk have problems sometimes with the FAT 32 file system. If you can get into windows, try running a thorough scandisk from there. It's possible that the DOS version of SCandisk is having trouble correcting a problem that WIndows will be able to sort.

If you are sure that there is no problem with the disk, and scandisk keeps coming up, you can disable it by going into the C:MSDOS.SYS file in Notepad. Scroll to the bottom of the screen until you see the command line AutoScan=1. Change it to AutoScan=0. If the line isn't there, add it at the bottom.

Please note that if you make this change scandisk will NEVER run automatically. So you may want to set up a scheduled task in windows to check your drive(s) for errors.

Hope this helps,
Gary

Actually, for later versions of windows (not sure which) additional values are supported.
AutoScan=0 : Scandisk is Disabled
AutoScan=1 : Scandisk Prompts First
AutoScan=2 : Scandisk Runs Automatically

The other answers sound real good. I had almost this exact same problem about 2 months ago on a client?s machine. I tried everything! Then just by chance I decided to use some compressed air to get the box cleaned up before starting a more invasiveprocedure and after that everything, I mean EVERYTHING started to work again. Before spending too much time on troubleshooting, try taking out the memory and processor (possibly the cards) **** out the machine real good, put everything back and boot it up. I have seen other instances where dust caused strange problems. Good luck!

Make sure that you have the Windows 98 large IDE hard drive cache supplement installed.

This adds a delay to the shutdown sequence so that the larger cache buffers on modern hard drives can finish the final write to the drive before power is removed.

As far as I know, you have to use Windows Update to install this update.

The System Configuration Utility?MSCONFIG.EXE can be accessed by entering msconfig in the run command box from the start menu.

This is a handy utility used to modify many of the settings for Win98. Individual lines can be turned on or off in yourconfig.sys, autoexec.bat, system.ini, or win.ini files.
You can use it to turn off the annoying Scandisk function if you are forced to shut off your system, and can turn off any program starting at boot up. The command msconfig.exe is found in thec:\Windows\system directory where you can create an icon for it on your desktop.
It?s a very handy tool for troubleshooting startup problems.

Hope this helps

What you are experiencing is an ongoing problem with scandisk. If at any time the operating system has marked clusters as bad on the hard drive, scandisk will NOT bypass them and just check the good clusters. It will re-scan the defective clusters EVERY time a thorough surface scan is run.
You have two options: 1) Once booted into the OS, run scandisk but be certain to check the box for "Standard" scan instead of "Thorough". That way when it runs at boot it will check everything but the surface, and allow you to continue. 2) Acquire a program such as Spinrite from GRC (www.grc.com) and let it scan and attempt to recover those clusters (it takes a LONG time to run).
Last, but not least, this may be an indication that your hard drive is slowly failing and will soon die. BACKUP all your important data and replace the drive as soon as possible! This one is my best recommendation, as I do data recovery from these situations and have seen it happen too many times!

BTY: If you let Scandisk continue to run it WILL eventually finish, it just has to get past re-checking those bad clusters.
