@ symbol not working on a dell laptop

By srobinson ·
I am troubleshooting a Dell laptop in which the @ symbol cannot be typed. I don't know if the shift keys don't work or if just the keyboard settings are not setup right. When I push the shift + 2 key nothing appears. however, a 2 appears when I push just the 2 key. Can anyone help me solve this for them.

If you go to Control Panel, Keyboard, Input Locales, change. What is the default setting for the keyboard? Maybe try changing it to another version of english, see if that works?

I'd say the shift keys are gone, to be honest. Try other shift functions to see. If the version of windows you have includes the accessibility keyboard, use your mouse to choose the @symbol and see if it works. I'd also try an external keyboard in a docking station, if you have one.

@ key problem

by seb_ten In reply to @ symbol not working on a ...

I'm aware that there is a problem with Avast anti-virus. Is it a compatibility problem with the OS and software itself.

Microsoft can say it's Avast problem and vice-versa. I'm not there so say who's right or not because Microsoft are "always" right ...

I think the key got blocked for a security purpose by a bug. At first it's not suposed to affect the keyboard but in fact it does somehow on a few machines I've seen so far.

Only issue I can think of , try installing new drivers or add the @ to a list of custom caracters if possible.
