1 or 2 nic adapters on sbs 2003

By seansmail ·
is setup of sbs 2003 easier with 2 adapters or can i get away with 1 if im not looking to access the server locally other than admin on the server.
im planning to run it but access will be via vpn for a friend and staff in another location or when mobile.
Also is a separate modem and router advised rather than a asdl modem with built in router.?

so out of my depth!!!!

cheers sean

nics

by S_H_A_N_E In reply to 1 or 2 nic adapters on sb ...

If you plan to have no local connections to the server it is much easier to set up just one nic.
If you are planning to configure the server via a vpn connection you will firstly need to set up sbs to accept the incoming connection. Secondly you will need to set up the router/modem to accept the incoming connections both vpn and any other connections you plan to be allowed to the server.

In regards to a combined modem router or to have 2 seperate devices it depends entirely on the amount of traffic you plan to have through the devices. If it is low a combined unit is fine. Otherwise it is recommended to purchase seperate units.

you could always get the book Windows Small Business Server 2003 Administrators Companion and read it. It might help.
