2 minute stall during W2k Server Bootup

By Able-Admin ·
This morning I came in and applied the MS02-063 hotfix and rebooted as usual. During the windows startup process (progress bar at bottom, W2k Server bitmap background) the server seems to stall for a minute or two about halfway through.

when listening to the drive, I can hear it trying to access something. To me it sounds similar to this. (R = sound of reading) (- = second pause)

R-----R------R------R-----R------RR----R------RRRR
then it repeats this pattern for around 2 minutes beforecontinuing to load.

I checked the event logs and couldn't find anything solid that could be causing the problem.

Tried to boot up to last known good config. but that had the same problems.

Enabled Boot Logging and cant see anything really wrong with that either.

any suggestions? The server seems to be running fine once it starts up (possibly a little lathargic)

Thanks for your time.

If it's comming from the HD, it may be a bad sector. Try running a thorough scandisk to see if it picks up anything. It may also be a device trying to load that is no longer present or is not fuctioning, but that is less likely.

Dont think thats the problem. I neglected to mention that I also have this disk mirrored. Booting from the mirrored volume also has the same problems.

I couldn't find anything related to your problem in the knowledgebase article Q329834 on MS site.
If this server is stalling during the splashscreen portion of bootup..ie. windows2000 server logo with the different shades of blue bars across the bottom, this means it is having issues with a certain piece of hardware. This is the portion of bootup that win2k checks all hardware before starting up.
Now to find which is the offending hardware.
Good luck!

Odd...the problem seems to have dissapeared!?!
Strange that it would be stalling in the "hardware checking" section of bootup. No changes were made before the error started occuring.

Thanks for the help anyway guys!
