2 pc with diff. ip add. ranges comm. ?

By rohit_2712 ·
i asked the same ques. a week before, but it was misunderstood by many. here i am repeating the Ques. in a much detailed manner.
I am a cisco trainer and perform this experiment in my lab.
the ip add and subnet mask used on 2 pcs. are:-
PC1:-
ip add:- 192.168.10.12
s. mask:- 255.255.255.0
gateway:- 192.168.10.12
PC2:-
ip add:- 10.0.0.12
s. mask:- 255.0.0.0
gateway:- 10.0.0.12

and when tried to ping PC1 from PC2, it worked.
what can be a probable reason?

Since your IP and Gateway addresses are the same it would appear the each computer is acting as it's own router and building a routing table.

Are they connected on the same network segment ? I guess so, so the certifiablej answer is true. As theses 2 pcs are on a different subnets, you should have a router between them and it should not work with your ip setup above.

The reason is that this is the way that TCP/IP is designed to work. There is nothing between the two "networks" (each containing a single PC acting as its own router) to stop ICMP packets (i.e., no external firewall or router), and apparently these PCs are also not running a local firewall software, so a ping would work.

If you're a Cisco trainer, I wouldn't want to be in your class if you don't know how this works!

Hope this helps!

one never have your pc's the same as your gateway address unless they are like servers doing ip forwarding and thats a no no anyway unless you really need it.

There should be a router between these rigs to getm to talk if you a trainer you have got to have one lying around, heck even use boson to sim it if you had to.

As per the information you have provided itz not possible to ping each other unles there is a routing device or they r in different vlans. Please check your network details and then your self can come to the conclusion about this.

Cheers
