    2000 Domain Upgrade

    Locked

    by kinsdavid ·

    HI,

    Here is my scenario:

I have a 50 user 2k domain with one 2k domain controller. Exchange isn’t installed yet.

I will be upgrading the DC to 2k3 server and I want to know can I do the upgrade while the domain users are logged in and working?

I know the DC requires a reboot once the upgrade has taken place but will the upgrade mess with DNS and permissions for the users?

    thanks

I suggest having a second DC if you are upgrading to Windows 2003 as it will be down for at least an hour. The second DC can then be demoted once the main DC has been upgraded and is stable. Otherwise I suggest doing it during the weekend.

ADPREP does not necessarily require a reboot but installing Windows 2003 will prevent new users from logging in and access to resources may be affected such as file shares, internet, email etc.

The 2nd DC is a good choice for fault tolerance too.
For a supplmentary help, you can search adprep in Help and Support Center Windows 2003.
