2003 Server – Adding a Domain Controller – DNS Error

by jackarmy83 . Updated 18 years, 9 months ago

Hi All,

I am trying to add a new Domain controller in windows 2003. This will be the only domain controller and there are not others in existance on our network.

I do not want to install the DNS server on my 2003 server. I already have a DNS server running on a red hat linux box.

I am getting the following problem:

Note: I have replaced my actual domain with MYDOMAIN.

“Diagnostic Results
The registration diagnostic has been run 1 time.

The wizard encountered an error while trying to determine if the DNS server with which this domain controller will register supports dynamic updates.

For more information, including steps to correct this problem, see Help.

Details
The primary DNS server tested was: dns.MYDOMAIN.com ()

The zone was: MYDOMAIN.com

The test for dynamic DNS update support returned:
“DNS server failure.”
(error code 0x0000232A RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE)”

My dns server is not at dns.MYDOMAIN.com, it is at dns1.MYDOMAIN.com

I’m not sure why it is looking for it at dns.MYDOMAIN.com and I cannot find anywhere to change this.

Any ideas?

Regards..

Karl
