Hi,

Are you sure your ISP doesn't automatically disconnect you after four hours? Many ISPs offer either time based or Mb's downloaded style services.

If not, then is this consistent? Is it exactly four hours? And does it ever work past four hours?

Please let us know...

Cheers,
Tim.

To determine whether or not it is the OS, try your connection with another computer running a different platform. I doubt it is Me, however. As many issues related to that OS, it is unlikely that would be one of them. If you have broadband access (cable or DSL), and it seems by your wording you may be, you are likely on what's called "network weather," which has their DHCP server ping your pc. If there is no response after 4 hours, as is the case with my provider, it will not renew that IP, thinking it is no longer in use. Firewall programs are notorious for this and it is pretty difficult to configure them to allow the access. Talk to your broadband provider, but not Tier 1. Ask for someone in HSD admin. Good luck!

After 4 hours I would suspect that your system is running low on resources. Win ME is a particularly sensitive system- by the way although Microsoft says that it needs only 64 meg reality is it needs the minimum of 128 meg of ram to run of course the more ram the better. Anyway you can do a few things to free up resources
1. close and disable any TSR programs running in your system tray (the icons are located in the lower corner by the time)

2. go into your control panel click on internet options. The General Information should be showing-if not select the general tab- In the internet section you will see two buttons Delete Cookies, and Delete Files- these are part of the temporary cache- by cleaning up files you can eliminate some clutter that can slow your machine down.
3.Restart your machine- Oh another system hog is Macafee Anti-virus- it is notorius for taking over the processor and hogging computer resources- I reccomend Norton's System Works 2001- not 2000 because it is not compatible with me.
Good luck- I hope this helps
