AAAWORMALERT

By Frank Krebs ·
I have a client that was told to put AAAWORMALERT as a user in his Outlook address book. This way if a virus did infect his system and start sending out infected emails he'd get an immediate response. I can see the logic if it's tied to his email address. Has anyone else heard of this, and what do you think about it?

This is actually a fairly standard practice at the mail server level where an alert email administrator has a chance of shutting down his server before all the infected email is sent.

You don't normally see this at the individual machine level. This is mainly because once a user hits the send button and the email (with virus attached) goes to the email server, the user has no means of doing anything about it. All it would serve to do is notify the employee that he has committed a seriousfaux-pas (and maybe give him a chance to run and hide before getting inundated with irate phone calls).
