Access Denied. Driver Wont Install

By grantpaitz ·
I have a soundmax integrated sound drive that will not install. It says Access Denied. I have tried uninstalling the driver through device manager. I have also removed the soundmax entries in the registry. I have tried the remove program that came with the soundmax driver. It also does not matter whether I try to install the driver through add hardware wizard or through the install executable. I have also tried 2 different driver versions. I am signed in as admin as well as having proper permissions. PLEASE HELP

Install the driver in Safe Mode.

If you could, it must be a program (most likely a security related program) that prevents you from installing the driver. Identify the program and either upgrade or reinstall it.

If you could not, try the following. I assume Windows is either 2K or XP.

1. Scan for spyware and virus.

2. Check your account permission (if Windows 2K or XP Pro). Keep only what you need. This is to check whether there is permission conflict.

3. Create a local user account with administrative right. Login as the account and install the driver. This is to check whether your Profile got corrupted.

4. Run SFC /scannow from Start > Run. This is to check whether Windows protected files got corrupted.

If none of these works, reinstall Windows. Your last resort is to clean install Windows.

It has to be a security issue that is stopping this from installing. If you have Admin Rights and are sure of this there must be a critical Windows File involved that needs to be altered by the setup.

I would first try booting into Safe Mode and choosing Admin Account and try installing it that way and if that works check your actual account for the right privileges.

As an after thought you may like to have a look in BIOS and make sure that any Virus Scanners are turned off there as that could also be preventing the update.

Thanks for the replies guys. I figured it out shortly after posting the question. It turns out that I did not repair all the permission in the registry that were being affected by this driver install. I ended up resetting HKEY LOCAL MACHINE and CURRENT CONFIG. That Fixed the Problem!
Thanks Again
