Active Directory with Failover Clusters?

By aciesler ·
We are getting 2 new servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 making us 3 servers total with one running Ubuntu server. We wanted to run failover clustering between the two new servers to keep our inventory program up but also want to run Active Directory on one of the machines with the AD backup on either the Ubuntu or the 2nd server. Is this possible? Any recommendations? We want to stick with 3 servers but want the redundantcy

and you want redundancy for authentication and log in to the domain, then you need 2 domain controllers with the Global Catalog roles, DNS services, and sysvol and netlogon shares.

Here's the tricky part. If you want seperate boxes for redundancy then VM servers won't help. If you don't care about seperate boxes for redundancy, then use VMWare server to give you 2 DCs on 1 server and then the 2 new ones or even the Unbuntu box can be used for you high availability inventory program.
