Add RAM to IBM 350 P133

By warrenL ·
I have 16MB of RAM on my old computer.I think it will take a max of 32 MB of RAM. Looking in the computer it looks like 4 slots are being used for the 16 MB. How do I update to 32 MB? What is the best way to get those old 4 boards out? They seem to be welded in the slots.

Add RAM to IBM 350 P133

IBM has very little information about these older PCs on their website.

You say it is a Pentium 133.

If so, the memory is likely 72 pin SIMMs.
These need to be installed in matched pairs, and all 4 SIMMs must be of the same style.
(FPM, Parity, EDO)
Since you have 16MB, and all 4 sockets have memory in them, you likely have 4 4MB SIMMs.

I suspect that your motherboard can handle either 8MB, or 16MB, and may be able to use 32MB SIMMs.

Non-parity FPM SIMMs should work.
However, some of these boards required EDO SIMMs.

Your sources for SIMM memory are very limited.
Try www.crucial.com
www.compgeeks.com
www.computersurplusoutlet.com
www.pcliquidators.com

On a per MB basis, SIMM memory is much more expensive than DIMM memory.
It may be cheaper to buy a used PII or Super socker 7 PC than to upgrade this PC.

Removal:
At each end of the memory module you should see a small metal catch that holds the memory into the socket.
NOTE: If you do not see the catches, it is possible that the memory is actually soldered to the board.
If so, then you CANNOT add memory.

To remove a SIMM, push both metal tabs outwards, and help / allow the SIMM to tilt away from the catches.
To install a new SIMM, orient the notchin the end of the SIMM properly.
Slide the SIMM into the socket at an angle.
Tilt the SIMM up, align the 2 pins on the socket with the holes on each end of the SIMM, and lock the SIMM into the catches.

TheChas,
Great answer. You have convinced me to be happy with the RAM I have and not try to update this oldie computer.

Thanks, and best regards,
