adding a second hard drive

By drcrock ·
I had replaced my hard drive with a faster one, now that it is full, I would like to know how to use the old one as a storage space. When I try to connect it as a slave it comes on as the primary and the new hard drive is ignored. Please be as detailed as possible as I am a rookie.

1st) check the jumper on your old hard drive it may be set to MS (master)small plastic part usually found on the back. AND the second hard drive is set to SL (slave).
2nd) try putting the primary hard drive on the end of the data cable
3rd)check your BIOS settings and try setting it to auto detect the hard disk (if your BIOS supports this setting)

Some hard drives of differing manufacturers are not compatible. For instance I have found that Western Digital and Maxtor are not. Might go to the manufacturers website and check it out. Also might want to go into the device manager and verify that dual fifo is set for the hard drive controllers.
