Adding wireless to a network

I am running a Windows 2000 Pro peer to peer network through a wired router. There are three computers on the network presently. I want to add a fourth computer but it is approximately 500 feet away across the street. I know I will need to change my router to a wireless router and add a wireless LAN card to the fourth computer. I have read that some of the new hardware can do this. I am willing to add whatever I need to accomplish this. What I can’t do is run cable. Please address the hardware issue with suggestions of products and models.

You will not need to change your router. All you need to do is add an access point. I have used products from Belkin in a number of different scenarios and have found them extremely easy to set up. I would also recommend you look at SMC, US robotics and Dlink.
If possible situate the access point as high as possible and as near to line of sight with the client as possible (in window is good).

500 feet is a long distance for dlink or belkin router. You may need to get some extra equipment that would increase the signal distance it they get weak signals.

i’m with Lmon. 500 feet is maybe ok if you have clear shot with no reflections, interference, noise. etc. published device specs notwithstanding. however, having said all that, i have done as you wish. i used two linksys dual antenna wireless access points set up as bridge. worked great. advantage of this much $$ is it will work plus you can have wireless access from computer #4 via wireless lan card in either building. google 802.11 antenna for some good sites. you will be setting it up in bridge mode.

(1) Please explain bridge mode setup.
(2) If I use two Linksys dual antenna access points or routers, (one at the main network and the other across the street with computer 4), is there any particular advantage to connecting with wireless lan cards versus wired lan cards connected to them with ethernet cable?
