ADPREP Windows 2000 Server to 2008R2

By dave ·
Upgrade 2000 Domain. Add 2008 R2 DC

You have to run ADPREP(32) on the old server to bring Forest and AD etc up to the new specs.

Here were the steps.

We had an Old 2000 Server. The DVD Drive did not work.
Copied the 2008 R2 DVD to the old server and then ran ADPREP right from the old server.

*NOTE ADPREP on this DVD was 64bit. We had to run ADPREP32 on the older server.

Here were the events:
We attempted to run
\2008DVD\Support\Adprep\adprep32 /domainprep /gpprep

Because it is king of the Forest it asked us to first run
\2008DVD\Support\Adprep\adprep32 /forestprep

This ran successfully (Adprep successfully updated the forest-wide information.)

I then tried to fun adprep32 again and it told me that the domain needed to be changed to Native Mode.
(We would have set it up as mixed way back when because we had NT boxes then)
We went to Administrative Tools ?? Active Directory Domains and Trusts
We right click on the Domain and choose Properties. Under General there is an option to CHANGE.
(Note this can not be undone and if you have NT servers? You should not do this.)

We then ran \2008DVD\Support\Adprep\adprep32 /domainprep /gpprep
Adprep successfully updated the domain-wide information and Adprep successfully updated the Group Policy Object (GPO) information.
