I have NT Server 4.0 – Service Pack 5 running on a Dell 677 mhz Pentium III with 256 megs of ram. The connection to the internet is from an integrated NIC set at half duplex @10 meg through Verizon’s ADSL modem. This connection is shared with 10 computers on a 10 base-t lan. When dialed, the connection to Verison is almost immediate and with a bandwidth of around 450k. All lan users have access to the internet as well as each other. This adsl connection never drops, but in time the communication stops. Using NT’s dial up monitoring, the 10 meg connection with the modem shows connected, but there is no traffic input (from the modem to the computer), and only small intermittent traffic out (from the computer to the modem). All computers on this lan are able to communicate with each other but not with the shared adsl connection. This stopping of communication happens every night sometime after 5pm when all lan users have gone home for the day. In the morning I must hang up the connectionand re-dial. Everything is fine again until that evening.
My question is there anyone else experiencing the stoppage of communication with an adsl provider? Are other adsl users capable of 24/7?
I have set the network card in the server to half duplex, in the event there was a packet congestion issue. There are no problems with 10 users accessing the internet all day, yet when alone the server looses communication at night. I have communicated many times with the Verizon technical support but they have offered no solution.
