"alert case previously opened" Dell

By Casemaker ·
Hi,
I had a customer that had me install a cd-rw on their new dell computer. I never asked about warranties. After removing the case a message appears in dos that reads "Alert, Case previously removed. We called Dell and was told only authorized Dell techs could do this and that it would void the warranty. My customer is furious with me beacause they have a 3 yr warranty and feel I should have known not to open case. Does anyone know how to reset this. It is win2000 pro OS.
Thanks if you can save me, customer wants me to pay for warranty, a valuable lesson has been learned.

The message when you turn on the computer "Alert, Case previously removed" can be reset in the BIOS under Security settings. Chasis Intrusin will say DETECTED you can change this back to disable or enabled by pressing the left and right arrow keys. You can get to a BIOS in a Dell by pressing the F2 key when turning on the computer.

The answer is to reset this function in the computer's BIOS. Power off the computer and power it back on (be sure that the cover is closed properly - Dell has a sensor on the system case that notifies the BIOS when the cover is removed), go into theBIOS (F2 on the newer Dells), <enter> on System Security, you will see Chassis Intrusion detected. Highlight and use right arrow on keyboard to change the value to RESET. Enter to close. ESC and Save settings. Cold boot the workstation and the errorshould go away. This should help. I don't know why Dell are being so funny - we open their machines all the time to do front-end support. It often saves then a lot of time and the Technician they send doesn't have to carry so many spares with him.

The BIOS reset answers above are correct.

Dell has never voided warranties over adding new equipment to a PC. You did not do anything you should not have done. Dell would lose a lot of business if the warranties were voided for opening the case.
Ask to go to level two tech support, level one often gives the wrong answer.

Everyone here is correct about both points. You can reset the message appearing by looking in the BIOS, under Security.

Dell will not void the warranty by you adding a CD-RW to the buy's PC. Dell will not cover the added device under its warranty, however.

Cheers!

Click into the BIOS. There is an option for case intrusion and just disable it.
