AMIBIOS won’t boot to floppy if it sees

by sublime1 . Updated 25 years, 11 months ago

Pentium 233MMX, 64MB, 6GHD, new IDE cables, MB IDE. PC froze, not responding to anything. On reboot, it couldn’t find boot record for C drive. AMI BIOS, don’t have numbers now.
Sometimes will auto-detect HD, but numbers wrong. Sometimes acknowledges CD-ROM, but says not ATAPI compatible. Usually takes long time doing this. Other times, zips through detection process.

Bottom line: whether with HD #s it autodetects, or true figures, when it sees both HD and CD-ROM (could proceed with AV, FDISK, format, setup from WIN98 CD), it finishes boot process searching for boot record on HD, not finding, then searching for boot record on floppy drive, finding, and says “OK”, starts to process floppy, printer initiates, & when WIN98 should start, hangs, with “_” in bottom left of screen! To boot from floppy, and activate CD-ROM, I put “not installed” in BIOS for HD, which means can’t access to FDISK or format it! If BIOS acknowledges HD, it hangs at point where WIN98 should start from the floppy!
