AOL cannot initialize my modem

By ruspc ·
This all seemed to start when I tried to uninstall Norton System Works 2002 Pro from my Windows 98SE machine. I had to delete manually because the uninstall feature did not work. Also, while I had the program on the computer I ran Clean Sweep which cleaned up unnecessary files. When I tried to log on AOL for the first time after removing the Norton's, AOL's message said it "could not initialize my modem." After trial and error I discovered if I removed the modem via the System Manager and rebooted allowing the PNP to reinstall my modem I was able to log on AOL with no trouble. However, as soon as I shut down the computer and tried to log on the next day I got the same error message. The only way I can log on is to repeat the "remove modem " process. Can anyone suggest what is happening here? There does not appear to be any IRQ conflict. After reinstalling the modem Win98 always tells me,"This device is working properly."

Thanks,

Rus

The dialup adapter or the AOL dialup adapter may be corrupted. If the CAB files are not on the hard drive get your win98 disk. Open control panel and select add remove programs. Go to windows setup tab. Remove dialup networking. After you restart open AOL and it will automatically reinstall the dialup networking. After reboot AOL will start again. Go to the advanced setup options and have AOL discover the modem again.

If this doesn't work, I'd remove AOL, make sure the modem is working thenreinstall. Don't forget to go through and write down access nubers for your connection. The problem is probably not the modem but something to do with AOL. When you uninstall AOL it prompts you to save your personnal settings and download folder. The default location is the desktop. If needed you can restore those to the AOL folder afterwards.
There's instrcutions on this in the AOL help.

Again after uninstalling AOL, make sure the modem working and still there after rebooting. Use phone dialer to test. Or open hyper terminal and make a dialup, select the modem as connecton device. Type in ATDT and you should hear a dial tone. Or type in ATD and a phone number and it should dial out.

Reinstall AOL.
