Athlon Socket A Freeze!

By T-Man ·
I have a system I've built up containing the following:

700Mhz AMD Athlon (skt A) Processor
FIC AZ11 Motherboard
SpecTek 128Mb PC133 SDRAM
Diamond Stealth III S540 32Mb 4xAGP Graphics Card
Seagate ST320423A 20.4Gb UltraATA\66 Hard Drive
Acer CD650P 50x CDROM Drive
3.5" 1.44Mb floppy drive
Window 98 2nd Edition OS

Several programs (including the defrag tool) causes the CPU usage to max out at 100% and stay maxed (observed this with System Monitor). After about 30 seconds the computer freezes up completely and will not unfreeze. No matter how long you let it sit there. Keyboard nor the mouse will respond. The only solution is to reset or turn the power off. It also freezes several times during bootup. I've done a complete software rebuild and still have the same problem, even with nothing but the OS loaded on the computer. I've tried a generic VGA PCI graphics card with no luck. I'm not over clocking or anything beyond the normal operating specs. I've even put Norton Utilities on and CrashGuard doesn't even help. I'm 100% positive that it is not a software problem. Any suggestions?

Perhaps you should take a closer look at your
BIOS and also check for any bios upgrades.
You might want to load the factory defaults
for your BIOS and see if it makes a difference.I am using a 700mhz Duron with a
ASUS P5A board.When I first installed it I
got some strange effects.I have set my pnp
OS to no.I prefer to let my bios setup my
machine rather than Windows. There are a lot
of shared interupts with these new boards
and windows does not handle them well.
Hope this is of some value.

I've tried all of that already, thanks.

The CPU usage is normal, defrag will use all of your hardware it can to speed up the defrag time.

As for the crashing you get, I'd try to test out a diffrent CPU. AMD's K6 has a high falure rate, I believe it is every 1 in 4. This might just be aCPU that got past the quality control.

Good luck

Already tried that. I'm using the new "Thunderbird" Athlon socket A chips. I have two systems exactly the same and I have swapped parts back and forth between them.

Which PSU are you using because the Athlon needs an special PSU in order to run correctly. The standard ATX PSU is not suitable for the Athlon and can cause the problems you have described.

Things to check...
This is out of the AZ11 manual and I have found this same info in other MB manufacturers manuals as well... and I had to find a new PS for my ASUS A7 because of this problem:

It is strongly recommended that at least a 200-wattATX power pupply
be used for this motherboard. Make sure that your ATX power supply
can supply at least 20 amperes on the +5-Volt lead and 10ma
on the +5-Volt standby lead (+5VSB). Your system may become
unstable / unreliable and may experience difficulty in powering up if
your power supply is inadequate.

You may want to look at the FSB jumpers as well.. by default they are jumpered to 100mhz
--------------------------------------
Your problemappears to be hardware related... and I would look at the power supply first and then go to the memory and FSB settings.

I've since been in contact with FIC and found out that my BIOS were corrupted and returned the MB for replacement. The new MB worked fine and I have since built several Computer Work Stations with the AZ11 board and they all are working great.
