Is there any freeware on the net that I could use to Scan our network to report all the PCs running Windows, the Version they are using and the service pack of the machine.

You can always try nmap(freeware), which has an option to determine the OS of the scanned systems (http://www.insecure.org/nmap/index.html). It can scan whole networks and is ported to many operating systems. I don’t think it will be able to detect an Windows XP with Service Pack 2 yet.

      Hope this helps

Unless im looking at the wrong this, this looks a little complex. I ideally after something fast and wont take up much time. ie download and click go.

It’s not that complicated. You install it and use the gui or from a command line type:

      nmap -sT -O 198.168.1.1-254

This will scan the address range of 198.168.1.1 to
      198.168.1.254. It’s that simple.

Without a doubt, go to http://www.gfi.com and download their LANguard Netowrk Security Scanner. It is a full verion and free to use for 30 days or someting. After that it has reduced functionality unless you buy it. It iwll easily tell you your machine names and IPs and a whole bunch of other stuff if you want it to. We LOVE using LANGuard at our customer sites for eaxctly this.

      Hope this helps,

      Thanks,
