Backup Solution

By dwadejr ·
I am looking for a cheap (preferably freeware) program that will perform nightly or weekly backups of specified folders on client computers or a complete backup if necessary. I would prefer a software that resides solely on a server and backs up folders on client computers. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions?

How large of a network is it? One simple/cheap solution is to schedule a batch file to run nightly on the client machines. Script them to dump the files to a designated folder on the server. Set up shared backup folders for each client (BackupCompA in this example)on the server. Write up something like this in notepad:

xcopy c:\my documents \\"server"\BackupcompA\my documents /s/e /y
exit

save it as backup.bat Note that "server" is the name of the target server. Have scheduler on the client run this bat file every night. Set this up on each client, changing the folders being backed up as necessary, and the target folders on the server.

Winzip pro can do scheduled backups of data. As well it compresses and can encrypt all at once. It also can do incremental, etc. backup jobs.

It's about $50 registered, and it works really well.
