Bar Code Scanning

By jwh2 ·
Is there any security applications or process that will prevent bar codes from being duplicated (copy machine) and used? e.g. employee time/ID card.

We use a dark red background behind our bar codes to prevent copying. You will have to experiment with the color to make sure that your reader will still read it. The red color photocopies so dark that a reader can't pick up the lines.

Another option might be to use a 2-dimensional bar code. I would think it would be pretty difficult to create a readable copy on a standard copy machine.

I like the background color idea also, but your question illustrates one of the problems with using bar codes for security purposes.

I'm afraid not! If there were all one would need do is resort to photography.

If you are talking about bar code creation (from within a database application) the answer is absolutely! Its not applied to the bar code itself however, the no duplicates security is applied to the code source text.
