Beginner – multicasting Help / Info

by mikeabcde . Updated 17 years, 4 months ago

Hello relatively new to the networking administration side of computing.

Looking for information or handy links or a breife for multicasting.

The task:
Microsoft updates across a variety of platforms namely 98se / 2000 SP3 / XP Pro SP3.

Not particularly fussed with our current automatic updates, chews into bandwidth (have 75 units in 5 class’s) and the usage can / could choke the training network.

Dont think i need to know about the protocols for each one of the routers and switches along the way or datagrams etc…at least not at this stage, just the go here download the files to the server, set I.P range and hit the go button, type instruction would be a blessing.

Server platform is Windows Server 2003 for small business server with sp2.

Understand that i can go to the MS update site and use adminsitrator options to download the required files but from there the mulitcasting side of things gets hazey. Mainly with a whole lot of technical information that the head just doesnt need yet..take baby steps, get the concept, get the outline of steps that need to be taken, or further info on the steps, and then implement a trial, then roll out to the rest of the training wing with the MS updates…at least thats what i would really appreciate, from those with far more knowledge than me on this subject.

Thanks in advance for info and advice – The beginners guide to multicasting… which is pretty much where i’m at this stage.
