Best Athlon, PIII, Celeron configuratio

By Adriatico ·
Any ideas on the best CPU/m'board/video/sound/memory? I'm building a new system for home and will probably end up getting a processor running at about 700Mhz (or thereabouts). Budget is tight (I'm using my tax return).

Performance-wise, I'd like to get the best combination available based on whichever CPU I get. I can probably afford all but the latest and greatest in video and sound.

Thx

PS: I will be running work related apps and I play games online .... a lot

Best Athlon, PIII, Celeron configuratio

Hi, I like asus motherboards (www.asus.com)and I still like intel cpus' even though athlon might be a better choice if you are a gamer. I've seen athlon bundles (cpu, heatsink, motherboard on egghead's auction site -price has varied depending on cpuspeed which has been anywhere from 650-800). I run PIII's but there are plenty of PII-PIII boards so you could upgrade your processor later if need be. As for video and sound, I see deals all the time on auction sites (voodoo 3 for under $80 at egghead; viper stealth, same for soundblaster cards). If gaming is your thing, I would think athlon would be the more cost effective alternative, especially if you get it bundled. I'd also get at least 128mb of memory and make sure the board will upgrade at LEAST to 512 mb (preferably more). Check out latest product reviews at www.tomshardware.com Good luck.

I have a little more specific configuration in mind. As I have just rebuilt my whole system, I know what you are looking for and need. I agree with the previous response about the Asus MB, I am using the Asus P3V 4X($175). It has all the bells and whistles: ATA66, onboard temp. monitor, 4X AGP, 133 mhz FSB, and most of all it has a large number of bus setting you can change either in the bios or with jumpers(for overclocking). P3's are the chip to get, a coppermine will outrun an Athalon, especially for gaming, anyday of the week. Get your self a cheap P600e($220) and change the FSB on the MB to 133mhz and overclock the proessor to 800 mhz(my 550 is clocked to 750, and RUNS GREAT!!!). You need atleast 128 MB of PC133 ram, Crucial($140) is good and comes with a lifetime warranty(get ECC if ya can afford it). Get a good, large(20GB) ATA66 HD, Western Digital and maxtor are both good($140). Any 32 or 64 MB Geforce($250) card will do(Guillemot is good), but ya might stay away from DDR if want DVD. DVD($120

Hi,

It depends on what you want to spend and if
you don?t mind keeping on top of bugs etc.

For a rock-solid system, go for an ASUS MB,
P3 CPU, ELSA GFX Card, Creative Sound Card,
Siemens RAM.

If you want to save a bit and don?t mind reading NGs & updating, ABIT KA7 MB, Athlon
700 + Double fan for overclocking(a lot of 500-650 Athlons are rebadged 700?s if you want to risk it), Creative Sound Card, Maxtor Diamond Max+ HD (or IBM GXP75 series
if you want the ultimate IDE).

CU,
Glenn

A budget high performance system would sound more like considering an Asus motherbrd, with a Athlon cpu,Western digital hdd, creative labs6X dvd rom,and TNT or choice of graphics board with 32mb AGP
Motherbrd-$200
CPU-$125-200
Intel Pentium is verycostly,so the choice of athlon is a more wiser choice

Well I just finished rebuilding the whole thing (including monitor)...

Asus K7-M Motherboard with an Athlon 750mhz processor, 192 MB of RAM, Asus V6600 (Nvidia Geoforce 256 chipset), Soundblaster Live! Value Soundcard, 17.8 Gig Seagate HD, 10X DVD Rom, Case, ATAPI ZIP Drive, Floppy, and a KDS 19" Monitor for $1700. Drop the monitor and Zip drive and the whole thing cost me $1250. If you went with a 700Mhz Athlon it would probably be about $75 cheaper so about $1175

Drop the Asus 6600 for a Voodoo 3 and you're looking at $1005
