BINFO.DLL & Vsmon Error messages

By nicki.ansdale ·
Help requested please - Operating system Windows ME. On start up, but before Desktop reached I am getting "Error starting program - a required .DLL file, BINFO.DLL was not found". When this is OK'd you go to Desktop and get error message "Vsmon has caused an error in KERNAL32.DLL. Vsmon will now close. If you continue to experience problems try restarting your computer". If you close this my computer still functions. I have tried PowerQuest Second Chance back to before this happened, but it has not cured the problem. I have tried Windows Help, but I do not appear to have Windows Restore program included (I have a Tiny computer, so no help there!)

I have a System Restore Pack, but believe this means I will lose all my program updates, etc. - I do regularly backup my data. Tiny did not supply an actual Windows ME disk.

BSINFO.dll error can be cleared up by opening the Control Panel,double-click the Add/Remove programs, look new.net in the list and remove

Vsmon.dll is associated with a SPY program that is loaded on your computer try removing the program, then reinstall

Re: BINFO.DLL error message - looked for new.net in Add/Remove Programs - not listed. Any other suggestions welcomed?

Re: Vsmon part of reply - you say it is associated with a SPY program - how do I track it down - the only new program recently loaded was Norman Anti-Virus,version 5.00.42 which I do not really want to lose - surely this could not be causing these problems?

Hi Nicky,
VSMon is not spyware, rather it's associated with Zone Alarm. It may help to uninstall/reinstall ZoneAlarm.

As for BInfo, (which I believe is part of new.net spyware that installs with file-sharing programs like Kazaa and Limewire) try downloading and running AdAware (a free spyware removal tool) here:

best of luck,

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, this was only a partial help in that it has not actually cured the problem, but, by uninstalling then reinstalling Zone Alarm, I have at least updated from v.3.1.024 to v.3.1.291. Upon downloading the latter version, I restarted, as instructed, & thought great, no VSMon message, but, on installing & subsequent shutdowns, the problem has reappeared.
Any more ideas anyone please?

Hi Nicky,

Try downloading Startup Cop (run a search at download.com, it should turn up), and use it to modify the programs that run at startup. Odds are there are many programs running at startup that don't benefit you at all (new.net, aoltray, realtray etc) and one of those is missing a DLL.

If that's what's happening here, and the prog is DISABLED from startup, you shouldn't get that error msg.

You can also type MSCONFIG at a command/DOS prompt to get into "selective startup" whichdoes the same thing, but Startup Cop is easier IMHO.

If you need more help, let me know what programs come up when you run Startup Cop, and I'll help you decide which ones are essential (prob no more than 3-4) and the rest which are not to your benefit and can be disabled.

best,
Ed
