Remove CMOS Battery "may" work

by 1bn0 In reply to bios password

FYI the CMOS battery on a thinpad is usually a small button cell shrink wrapped to a connector tucked in by the built in Network Adapter.

Access is by removing the cover plate on the bottom of the machine over the NIC.

Carefully remove the NIC and look for the CMOS battery just in under the plastic edge.

I'm not sure about some of the current models, but I do know on some older ones , it was not possible to reset the bios password yourself. The only solution provided by bIBM was to send the unit in for "Repair" and they wouldreset it for you.

Cost at that time was 90 CDN.

Best Way

by Tig2 In reply to bios password

Call your manufacturer and provide them with your warranty information.

CMOS re-set in this case is useless.

It is generally considered to be unacceptable to ask or answer password reset questions here. This is a forum for working professionals. Do please understand that we get people through here all the time trying to get password reset information and have no way to verify their intent. Not accusing you- just trying to explain why.

For your problem though, the answers provided will not fix your problem due to the hardware architecture.

Good luck!

From my previous replay

"The only solution provided by bIBM was to send the unit in for "Repair" and they wouldreset it for you.

CMOS reset is NOT CONSIDERED A WARRANTY ITEM.

Its not IBMs fault if a user/owner cannot remember the password the USER?OWNER forgot or does not have anymore.

Removing the CMOS battery DOES work in SOME cases.

You are correct , ghowefver that it is usually nnot an option for notebook P.C.s.

And you both missed my point

It is not considered acceptable to openly post password bypass information.

If you know that the poster is genuinely in a jam, try using peer mail to help out. There have been way too many spam and hack posts lately to just always trust. I understand that people get into jams- take it private.

In all honesty, the rationale for this is less to do with the guy asking the question and more to help insure that lurkers don't start treating this as a hack site.

I certainly did not mean to be offensive to either of you in any way.
