Black squares for icons?

By evil_alien ·
hi!
I'm running win98se and all my icons when they are small, like when u change 'view' to 'list', are all black squares. Then the squares mutated and became half squares or half squares with horizontal lines through them...still black and still small icons. And this only occurs when they are small...when they are the larger icons they are perfectly normal.
So...help! do i have a virus? becuase it also seems i am losing all my drivers too...my pc freezes all the time and i cant get my work off it. Help please!

First run the anti-virus software to see if virus is present
Ref the following site concerning HYBRIS Trojan virus
http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJAN_HYBRIS.C
Another option is to use TweakUI a powertoy utility that gives you repair option to rebuild icons, download from cnet

You might also want to try updating or reinstalling your video driver, I just ran into a similar situation where a toolbars buttons were all black. Tried updating to a newer driver and the system started locking up, then when I reinstalled the old driver, the problem disappeared.

If updating the driver for your video card does not fix it, try deleting Windows' icon cache (it will re-create it when you reboot). The file is called SHELLICONCACHE (no extension at the end) and because it's a hidden file, you may have to configure Windows to show Hidden files (Open My Computer and you will this under View, Options).
